About me

My name is Fotis and I am a Software Engineer based in Athens, Greece.

During my career I have worked as an independent developer as well as a team leader and mentor. I created some simple apps but was also involved in large and complicated projects that require effective management and communication across teams of various disciplines. Regardless of the project’s nature and size, I always appreciate clean code, thoughtful design choices and aim for higher quality.

November 2020 - November 2023
Refactored the whole Zombies Run app using The Composable Architecture, SwiftUI and Swift Concurrency. Modularised the project with SPM and created preview apps for ease of development and testing. Reimplemented in-app purchases using StoreKit 2 and provided Combine-based wrappers for other layers (Core Location, data access, Network Path Monitor etc). Before that, refactored the Home Screen to use modern collection views (diffable data sources and compositional layout), helped transition to RxSwift and RxCocoa, improved overall accessibility (voice over, dynamic fonts) and prepared the app for localisation.

Introduced a reactive and unidirectional architecture using RxSwift and ReactorKit. Refactored the networking layer providing reactive extensions (Moya and Starscream) and gathered business logic to a dedicated layer. Improved the infrastructure for creating ‘white labels’ and organised external and internal dependencies with CocoaPods. Set up CI (Jenkins and Fastlane) automating internal builds for multiple environments and targets. Implemented large features (push notifications, dashboard, profile comments and status updates, follow). Communication with Product Owners, QA and Designers, as well as empowering the team and mentoring.

Built a few apps from the ground up (Cook Planner, The Region of Attica) and helped with maintenance, bug fixing and new features for others (Cosmote What’s Up, Home Run). Responsible for enrolling to the Developer Program as well as TestFlight and App Store distribution.

Involved in the project from early prototyping to main development and distribution. Clarified specifications and helped define backend APIs. Contributed in shaping the team culture, collaboration with the Android lead and mentoring. Set up CI for QA builds and maintained App Store releases. Participated in Usability Testing sessions and provided feedback to the User Experience lead.

PoNR / Anomie
May 2018 (Plastik)
Participation in the list of curated works for Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF18) as member of the group “Plastik”. Implemented a key part of the piece, an iPad application developed in Unity3D, using Vuforia for the AR functionality. A Raspberry Pi and OpenCV were used to capture an image of the viewer’s face, which would be sent wirelessly to the app, becoming part of the augmented content seen through the iPad.
Shutter Cam - Personalised Live Filters
2012 - 2016 (Carmine Studios)
Shutter is an iOS app that allows users to combine image filters and either apply them while taking a picture or use them to edit existing photos. The result is previewed in real time and it is possible to create, edit and save custom sets of creative filters (’lenses’) for later use. The app is written in Objective-C and uses Core Data and GPUImage.
CocoaHeads Shanghai
2013 - 2015
Started Shanghai’s CocoaHeads chapter. Gave several presentations and took care of organizing the monthly event.
Hybrid Surface
2009 (university team project)
Explored interaction techniques for an experimental user interface, combining touch input and tracking of tangible objects. Made in Processing.
